A visit to North Yorkshire in September is a great idea and this time of year is a superb time for experiencing the North Yorkshire countryside and coastline, and one different way to experience the beauty of North Yorkshire is the to explore the countryside using the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR).
There are a number of delightful stations located within the North Yorkshire countryside and you can travel in the railway’s locomotives with a 100 years of history. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) is hosting its Annual Steam Gala from Friday 28th September to Sunday 30th September. The steam gala will feature a combination of guest locomotives in addition to the home fleet engines in steam over the weekend. This year will be a special steam gala as it will be a celebration of 100 years of the railway’s Q6 locomotives along with the 100th anniversary of the RAF.
The NYMR’s own Q6 locomotive is 100 years old and additionally preserved locomotives of the same age will join the railway for the celebration making the gala one of the railway’s largest with potentially 12 locomotives on show. The railway has invited locomotives from all over the country and will include Locomotive number 6 Douglas from the Talyllyn (which is also an ex RAF engine and painted in RAF plant blue to mark the centenary) which will travel on a flat wagon as part of the railway’s demonstration goods train.
There will also be events be hosted in the stations along the line including the Autumn Steam Gala Beer Festival which sees Levisham and Goathland offering a wide selection of real ales from local breweries such as Brass Castle, Helmsley Brewing Co, Baytown and many more.
