What Makes The Ultimate Sunday Roast ?

A good Sunday roast holds a special place in the heart of many . In the UK the traditional Sunday roast is reported to be only second in popularity to the ever popular “fish & chips”.

What makes the ultimate Sunday roast ?

The main event is the first point to be decided, which is  what is the roast meat? The most popular is Roast Chicken and there are loads of recipes for keeping the bird moist during roasting like butter under the skin and regular basting. Roast chicken is also one of the more economical options. Roast Beef is also a Sunday favourite, and roast beef, normally topside, is traditionally served with Yorkshire puddings. Roast Pork is also very popular with the skin being roasted into crispy cracking. So, once you have decided what roast to have, next on the list is to decide what accompaniments to have with it.

Proper Gravy is normally made with the meat juices and water from the vegetables and is seen as an important part of a Sunday Roast as is the perfect Yorkshire pudding. Traditionally served with beef they are now so popular that they are served with all sorts of meats and roasts . As well as the  roast meat, crisp and fluffy roast potatoes, be they cooked in oily, goose or duck fat are also a favourite of many. Outside of Christmas the favoured  vegetable accompaniments are cabbage and carrots  although more modern options  like broccoli, kale and sweet potato are also popular . Sides are also part of the roast such as horseradish for beef and apple sauce for roast pork, a great side dish can finish the perfect roast splendidly.
