James Alfred “Alf” Wight, OBE, FRCVS was born on the 3rd of October 1916 he is know to millions however by his authors name James Herriot. 2016 marks the centenary of his birth and never a better time to visit the North Yorkshire Countryside that inspired his books. Although known as a author he was actually a veterinary surgeon and used his many experiences over the years as the inspiration for his series of semi autobiographical books which featured of stories about animals and their owners. His first book featured James Herriot as a new vet in Yorkshire and was called  “All Creatures Great and Small”

The books remain popular, but many became acquainted with James Herriot through the celebrated tv series “All Creatures Great and Small” which also introduced the books to many and ignited interest in a new legion of fans. Thirsk is home to the award winning ” World of James Herriot ” which boasts the world’s largest Herriot/veterinary memorabilia. This popular North Yorkshire  tourist attraction has won awards including the  Visit England Awards for Excellence GOLD WINNER 2015 (due to their exemplary contribution to tourism in this country),  ‘Best’ Visitor Attraction in Yorkshire and the BEST Small Visitor Attraction in England.

Many events are planned to celebrate the centenary including a gala dinner featuring Yorkshire’s Lesley Garrett OBE. Surely 2016 is a great time to visit this stunning part of the country and see the Yorkshire Moors and North Yorkshire Dales and visit the World Of James Herriot
