250 Years of Chocolate in York

The origins of Terry’s chocolate can be traced back to a small shop in the city of York . The company went on to create one of the worlds iconic chocolates which is still very popular and a household name today, the chocolate orange. An exhibition is running on the city of York to celebrate 250 years of Terry’s , The exhibition runs from March to December 2017 and celebrates the story of a chemist to chocolate maker and also the social impact of the city of York.

The shop in York was originally opened by Partners Berry and Bayldon who sold lozenges and other types of simple confectionery . However in the 19th century they were joined by Mr Joseph Terry, a chemist who adapted easily to a career in confectionery and who became a pioneer in quality confectionery.

Terry’s Chocolate by the 20th century had been responsible for introducing the world to boxed chocolate assortments and the iconic Terry’s chocolate orange. The exhibition will showcase some of the most interesting products from Terry’s including opium based throat sweets to decadent chocolate boxes as well as old favourites such as Waifa, Neapolitan and Spartan. The exhibition will also look at the social impact on the city of York including how Terry’s influenced the lives of tens of thousands of residents who worked for the company as well as iconic architecture and even horse races.
